From the start, the Department has developed cutting edge research, resulting in the national and international recognition of several groups. As an example of this extensive research activity, the Cataln government (Generalitat de Catalunya) awarded the Narcís Monturiol Medal to two professors from the Department, to Dr. Ignacio Romagosa (Professor of Genetics and Plant Breeding) in 1998, and to Dr. Ramon Albajes (Professor of Agricultural Entomology) in 2002. Only five researchers of Lleida University have received this award.
Two members of the Department are researchers funded by the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA), Dr. Paul Christou and Dr. Gustavo Slafer.
Currently, there are seven research groups in the Department of Crop and Forest Sciences all of which have a Mention of Quality by the Catalan government and that integrate most of the research and teaching staff.
